NASSAU, Bahamas (October 26, 2012)—Hurricane Sandy, which is projected to hit the Atlantic coast of the United States early Tuesday continued to cause damage and deaths in the Caribbean Friday.

The number of dead in Haiti from Hurricane Sandy has reached 26, with 14 others dead elsewhere in the region.

Officials at a morgue in western Haiti say if the rain from the storm continues, they will expect to see more deaths.

Officials say some died while they tried to cross rivers that were swollen by the rain and others were killed in mudslides.

As Sandy continues on a course toward the United States, forecasters are warning that it could merge with two other systems to become a monster, hybrid storm.

They say there will be hundreds of miles of steady, strong and damaging wind and rain for the entire Eastern region for several days.
