ATLANTA (January 17, 2013)--A winter storm that dumped 4 inches of snow in Mississippi is linked to a traffic death in the state.
The accident involved a man whose car struck a downed tree.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol said it appeared that the tree was uprooted by wind and ground saturation.
The system was expected to spread north and east toward Washington, D.C.
A mix of thick snowflakes and sleet was falling Thursday afternoon in Huntsville, Ala., turning roadsides and plowed farm fields white. Heavy snow reduced visibility to a half-mile north of Birmingham.
In northern Georgia, the heaviest snow was expected to fall in the mountains, with lighter amounts possible in parts of the Atlanta area.
Snow is possible across much of North Carolina, with as much as 9 inches in the northwestern mountains.
