Phil Predicts 6 More Weeks Of Winter

Phil saw his shadow Thursday.

PUNXSUTAWNEY (February 2, 2012)--Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil made his prediction on Thursday after seeing his shadow.

His prediction of seeing six more weeks of winter was made on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in which he is named about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

The ceremony which began at around 7:30 a.m. EST brought in hundreds of thousands of spectators, despite near-freezing temperatures.

Among those who came out included Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett who expressed his excitement over the large numbers.

"What started as a small gathering in 1887 has now evolved into tens of thousands of visitors from around the nation and even the world coming to Punxsutawney to participate in this time-honored Groundhog Day tradition," Corbett said.

Those who couldn't make it to Gobbler's Knob could follow the groundhog on all major media sites like Twitter and Facebook, or watch a webcast of the event on his website.

Event organizers from the Punxsutawney Goundhog Club's Inner Circle say that since 1886 Phil has now seen his shadow 100 times and hasn't seen it only 16 times.
