ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. (January 31, 2013)--A storm that sent tornadoes through parts of the Southeast, leaving two people dead, spread power outages from the Carolinas to Connecticut Thursday.

The storm also triggered flash floods, and forced water rescues in areas outside Washington, D.C.

More than 100,000 homes and businesses were without power in Connecticut, Rhode Island and upstate New York.

Many homes in the Georgia city of Adairsville were in ruins.

TV footage showed flattened homes and parts of a big manufacturing plant wiped out.

Authorities say falling trees claimed two lives.

A man killed in Tennessee while taking shelter in a shed and another man was crushed in his bed in Georgia.

The storm front sprang out of the Midwest on Tuesday and also knocked out power to thousands.

There were several reports of tornadoes.

Early Thursday, parts of Virginia remained under tornado watches as the storm headed toward the Atlantic.
