Scores Of Motorists Stranded In Texas Panhandle

AMARILLO (February 25, 2013)--Gusty winds and heavy snow combined to leave scores of vehicles stranded Monday in the South Plains and Panhandle of Texas.

The National Weather Service said as many as 100 motorists on Interstate 27 between Amarillo and Lubbock found themselves in whiteout conditions in the worst of the storm Monday.

The American Red Cross set up two emergency shelters for stranded motorists in the region.

Red Cross spokeswoman Martha Riddlesburger said about 50 stranded Interstate 27 motorists sought shelter at a shelter in Tulia, about 50 miles south of Amarillo.

Meanwhile, Red Cross spokeswoman Cindy Nickell says a shelter was also set up in Groom, about 45 miles east of Amarillo.

She had no immediate information on the number of motorists from nearby Interstate 40 who sought refuge there.
