Sick Frail Struggle The Most In Sandy’s Wake

NEW YORK (November 11, 2012)--Some of the most vulnerable have been pushed to the brink in the powerless, flood-ravaged neighborhoods struggling to recover from Superstorm Sandy.

The storm disrupted the fragile support networks that allowed the elderly, the disabled and the chronically ill to get by.

It has closed pharmacies, kept home care aids from getting to clients and made getting around in a wheelchair impossible.

Authorities and volunteers are trying hard to make sure such families don't fall into despair.

Paramedics from all over the country fanned out across the Rockaways section of New York City this weekend to check on shut-ins and anyone who might need help.

Nancy Clark of the city's health department says the idea was to find people who "sheltered in place" during the storm, who might need assistance.
