Snow Forces Thousands To Spend The Night In An Airport

TOKYO (January 15, 2013)--About 3,400 travelers were forced to spend the night at Tokyo's Narita International Airport because of snow.

More than 70 flights were canceled.

In the season's first snowfall in the Japanese capital, about 3 inches of snow fell in central Tokyo and around Narita Monday, which was a national holiday in Japan.

The snow snarled traffic and caused train delays.

Airport officials distributed sleeping bags, water and crackers to stranded travelers. Normal flight operations at Narita resumed Tuesday, except for a few delays.

Major train operator JR East says trains are running on schedule Tuesday, but sections of several highways around Tokyo are still closed as workers clear away snow and ice.
