MIAMI (November 18, 2013) Subtropical Storm Melissa formed in the central Atlantic Monday with maximum sustained winds near 50 miles per hour.
Some strengthening is predicted and the storm is expected to transition to a tropical storm by Tuesday.
Melissa was centered about 695 miles east-southeast of Bermuda and was moving northwest at about 9 miles per hour.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says large swells from the storm are already affecting parts of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the southeastern Bahamas.
