Texas Cities, Suburbs Consider Permanent Watering Restrictions

FORT WORTH (April 2, 2012)—The mayors of Dallas, Fort Worth and two of their biggest suburbs are considering making semiweekly watering restrictions permanent as part of a regional water conservation plan.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram she has discussed the move with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck and Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne.

Rawlings said he favors keeping the restrictions and will discuss the idea further this month.

The Tarrant Regional Water District provides untreated water to 98 percent of the residents of Tarrant County.

When the district limited watering to twice weekly in August, daily water consumption in the district fell by 8 percent.

Austin's water utility also is considering permanent semiweekly watering restrictions for its 892,000 customers.
