MIAMI (July 5, 2013)—Tropical Storm Erick was centered about 145 miles south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico Friday with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and it was picking up steam, the National Hurricane Center said.
The storm was moving west-northwest at about 13 miles per hour.
Erick could be near hurricane strength Saturday, though it is expected to remain offshore, forecasters said.
A tropical storm warning was in effect on the southwestern Mexican coast from Lazaro Cardenas to Manzanillo and a watch was in effect for Acapulco to east of Lazaro Cardenas and from west of Manzanillo to La Fortuna.
