CLE ELUM, Wash. (August 15, 2012)--Desperate residents near a wildfire in Washington state tried digging their own fire containment lines with hand tools in hopes of keeping a fast-moving fire from reaching their homes.
Fire officials in Kittitas County say the wind has made it difficult to turn back the flames and about 70 homes and hundreds of outbuildings have burned.
High winds are fanning the flames of fires across the hot dry West.
