Winter Storm Leaves More Than 660,000 Homes, Businesses Without Power

BOSTON (February 9, 2013)--The massive snowstorm that swept across the Northeast left at least 664,000 homes and businesses without electricity from Maine to Pennsylvania as wet, heavy snow and high winds snapped power lines in eight states, officials said.

Massachusetts was been hardest hit, with more than 400,000 utility customers without power Saturday morning.

Snow totals ranging from 17 to 28 inches have been reported across the state.

Fire officials in Quincy, Mass., said the power was out in most of the city.

More than 38 inches of snow and 82 mile per hour wind gusts were reported in central Connecticut.

The power outages also were in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey.

The silver lining in the Northeast storm clouds may be that the storm hit in on a weekend when fewer people were on the roads, which has given crews a fighting chance to catch up with road clearing.

The storm is blamed for at least four deaths in New York and Canada.
