H-E-B has launched a statewide tear pad campaign in stores to help support victims of Hurricane Ike. The campaign offers H-E-B customers an opportunity to join H-E-B’s hurricane relief efforts by adding a donation in increments of $1, $3, or $5 to their total grocery bill. Donations will be distributed to disaster relief agencies that will help thousands of Texas evacuees in need. H-E-B will route all donations directly to disaster relief agencies that can efficiently distribute the donations to areas where they are needed most.

The Killeen Salvation Army has an immediate need for powdered baby formula and jars of baby food for Ike evacuees. The Salvation Army is providing the food for the Killeen/Harker Heights shelters, but they were not prepared to provide for baby food and formula. They have purchased some, but their funds are limited, and they are expecting about 3 more days of shelter operations. They currently need 20 cases of powdered baby formula and assorted baby food at various age levels. Anyone who can provide the formula and food should take it to the Killeen Community Center. It will be used for babies at the Community Center and at the Teen Center.
Communities in Schools in Killeen is asking for help to clothe kids in pre K thru 12th grade who have been evacuated from the path of Hurricane Ike. Some 160 children are attempting to enroll in KISD while they are living in Killeen and Harker Heights. Many of the children were forced to flee with very few clothes. Mary Barr with Communities in Schools said they badly need clean clothes appropriate for children to wear to school. Communities in Schools is located at 4520 E. Central Texas Expressway (adjacent to Patriot Pontiac) Suite 106 and will be accepting donations at their office. Questions may be answered by calling the office at (254)-554-2132.
Donations of bottled water, food, diapers and infant formula for evacuees not staying in shelter are being accepted at the HELP Center at 11 N. 2nd St. in Temple. Monetary donations can be made out to the United Way of Central Texas with “Hurricane Ike” in the memo box and sent to our office at P.O. Box 1312, Temple, TX 76503.
Along with donations, volunteers to work shifts at the shelters are still in great need. If you would like to sign up to work a 4 hours shift, please call 254-298-5559 and leave your name and phone number for someone to call you back.
