WACO, Texas (KWTX) -The La Vega Pirates are led by Coach Will Cartwright who is a La Vega alum.

“When I was their age sitting in that desk I said man I’m not coming back here,” said William Cartwright.

His assistant is also a former LV athlete, and Will’s cousin.

“We played together. He’s a year above me so we’ve been playing since I would say probably like fifth grade,” said Larry Carpenter.

So they are family, but the team might as well be.

“Ever since I came here, they just brought me into this brotherhood and I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” said La Vega junior Randy Wolf.

When the seniors were in seventh grade, Coach Will was the junior high coordinator.

“When they were in the eighth grade their last game, I kinda got emotional with them because I didn’t want to see them go. I didn’t know what was next for me,” said Coach Will.

As it turns out, his next step would be coaching at the high school. So, six years later Coach Will is still coach will to these guys. The connection is as strong as could be.

“Now that we’re older, he just looks at us, and then we know that we better come on,” said Marcus Willis Jr.

Unlike the end of the eighth grade after this basketball season, that’s it but the relationships will continue.
