Vanguard Tennis wins State Titles

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The Vanguard Tennis team competed at the State Championships and won in multiple ways.

The Vikings swept the Boys’ State Tennis Championship and places second in the Girls’ Team Championship, winning the State Title in Girls’ Doubles - the first girls’ title for the school since 1999.

Vanguard boys’ had a perfect team score with all the finalists in singles and doubles.  In singles, Karch Knoll and Aldo Ibarra both won their first matches of the day in straight sets. Karch won in the finals over Aldo, losing only 2 games in the entire tournament. James Merchant and Zach Henry and Ethan Marsh and Hyrum Blackwelder also won in straight sets on their way to face each other in the finals. James and Zach won in their most competitive doubles match, over Ethan and Hyrum. James and Zach only lost 4 games in the tournament.  

In Girls’ Doubles, Courtney Weithorn and Avery Haynes were semifinalists, losing a close match 4-6, 4-6 to San Jacinto Christian Academy, Amarillo. McKenna Lowrey and Karoline Horner battled their way to a semifinal win of 6-3, 6-4, and then defeated the San Jacinto Team, 6-4, 6-3. McKenna and Karoline survived four close matches in the tournament to win the State Doubles Championship Title, the first Girls’ Doubles State Title since 1997, and the first Girls’ State Title (team) since 1999. 2021 Boys’ Team State Champions2021 Girls’ Team State Runner Up
