MARLIN, Texas (KWTX) - Riley McKenzie and Jaxon Booth are recent high school grads and will be joining college rodeo programs in the fall.

Before that though, they have to finish out their high school team roping careers at the state competition.

“You high school rodeo all year. We go to twelve rodeos and the top ten go to state,” explained McKenzie.

Riley and Jaxson weren’t just top then, they won their region.

“I’ve done rodeo like all junior high and high school and never won the region so I was pretty excited to win it especially being my last year rodeoing,” said Booth.

Jaxon and Riley are a new duo, just paired up together this year. Last year, Riley made it to state with Jaxon’s brother.

Riley hopes to learn from his experiences at state last year, and advance to the later rounds of the competition.

At state, they will compete for awards and the honor of representing Texas at the national high school finals rodeo in Nebraska next month.

The team roping competitions will begin on Tuesday in Abilene.
