NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) - June 24 marks the first day of fireworks sales in Texas, and firework retailers are encouraging shoppers to shop early instead of waiting until the last days leading up to Independence Day.

Store shelves at Top Dog Fireworks in Navasota are fully stocked leading into the first day; however, Sue Davis with Top Dog Fireworks says that could change as the Fourth of July approaches.

“Due to a lot of shipping problems from China, where most fireworks are made, we will be experiencing a shortage of certain types of fireworks,” said Davis. “It’s difficult to predict exactly what, but right now the stores are fully stocked and we encourage everybody to shop early and make sure you get your favorites, even though we are open until July the Fourth at midnight, you really want to come early.”

Additionally, it’s important for shoppers to keep in mind that with the possible shortages, they will see price increases this year, too.

“Some of the prices are going up because of the shortages, but if you come in while the discounts [at Top Dog Fireworks] are in effect then that’s going to ameliorate that problem,” said Davis.

To encourage shoppers to come in and shop early, Top Dog Fireworks is offering a breakdown of sales.

  • June 24-27: 20% off everything in the store
  • June 28-30: 15% off everything in the store
  • July 1: 10% off everything in the store

According to Top Dog Fireworks, during these first eight days, if a guest spends $250, they get a free cake firework.

Helping staff the store is the Navasota High School drill team, the Diamonettes.

Navasota Diamonettes team colonel, Haley Ramirez says one of her favorite things about working in the store is growing closer with her teammates.

“My favorite part is growing bonds with all the girls and making big sales because it’s really fun when we see a lot of people come in and help us,” said Ramirez.

The team also receives part of the proceeds.

“We use the proceeds for contest fees. We [also] use them for when we go to football games or even for our spring show and banquets,” said Ramirez. “This helps everything.”

Top Dog Fireworks is located at 23510 SH 6 S in Navasota.

They are open Jun 24-28 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Jun 29 - July 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., July 2 and 3 a.m. to 1 a.m., and July 4 from 9 a.m. to midnight.
