Shooting at Hewitt park sends man to hospital

HEWITT, Texas (KWTX) - Hewitt police officers are investigating a shooting at a park that sent a man to the hospital.

Officers responded to the shooting at Hewitt Park on Hewitt Drive just before 7p.m. Wednesday.

Witnesses told officers that the victim was playing basketball with several other adults when the suspect who was wearing a dark jacket and a facemask, exited from a vehicle parked in the parking lot and began to argue with the victim.

Witnesses said that suspect was not part of the basketball game, but had recently pulled in to the parking lot and remained in the vehicle.

The victim and the suspect continued to argue, the suspect finally walked away – back to the maroon vehicle - and the victim continued with his game.

Approximately 2-3 minutes later the suspect walked back to the basketball court and again began to confront the victim, this time he had an unknown type rifle inside his pants / or was holding it downward next to his leg. The suspect brought the rifle up and struck the victim in the head with the stock end of the weapon. The suspect attempted to strike the victim repeatedly, but the victim as able to get up and begin running east through the park. As the victim began to flee, the suspect fired multiple rounds from the weapon striking the victim at least one time in the leg.

Other witnesses who were at the location observed the victim get shot and pulled him into their vehicle and transported him to Providence Hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Witnesses said the suspect – still holding the rifle, got into a maroon 4Dr vehicle – which as occupied by 2-3 other individuals and left the park at a high rate of speed.

This is still a very active investigation and police believe there is no further danger to the public.

The evidence so far has revealed that the suspect and victim knew one another but it is unknow how at this time.
