Baylor Scott & White Temple ranked as #2 major teaching hospital in America
TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple was just ranked as the #2 major teaching hospital in the nation by Fortune and IBM Watson Health.
For Associate Chief Medical Officer and lifelong employee Mike Averitt, it’s a major victory.
“I actually trained here in Temple 30 years ago and loved it enough to stay,” he said.
“That’s the thing about quality, you never win. You keep getting better every day.”
Researchers from IBM came up with the ranking by looking at more than 2,500 eligible hospitals around the country, studying clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, financial and community health.
“Lots of what I learned was not just from physician mentors,” Averitt said.
“It was from the nurses, the therapists, and all the people working together as a team. We take care of each other, we learn from each other and it’s all about teamwork.”
The ceremony celebrating the ranking also kicked off Baylor Scott & White’s community showcase, offering resources and community programs for employees and their families to get involved with.
While Averitt is proud of the ranking and the event, he says there’s always more room to grow.
“This is a way to not only help them into the medicine world, but also the community they’re going to live with,” he said.
“There’s always room for improvement and we have so many different teams working in different areas and we’re just gonna keep plugging.”
