Some of the most popular fireworks already selling out in Central Texas
TROY, Texas (KWTX) - A shortage of fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July holiday has retailers urging customers to shop early.
American Fireworks, one of the largest fireworks retailers in Central Texas, said its stock is 60-to-70 percent below normal.
Fireworks industry experts say the shortage was caused by factory shutdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shortages that followed.
“We have a shortage of truck drivers, we have a shortage of equipment at the rail yard, we have a shortage of employees,” said Glenn Davis, the manager of American Fireworks.
Davis said his team anticipated the shortage and made plans to distribute their merchandise. He said while all of their fireworks stands and shops are open for the 4th of July, they may not have all of the normal options.
Firework sales began Thursday in much of central Texas and retailers say shopping early will help prevent disappointment as there likely won’t be many options to choose from as we get closer to the 4th of July.
Davis said he anticipates that the shortage will have effects on the fireworks business throughout the summer and fall and into the next big fireworks themed holiday: New Year’s Eve.
