MADISONVILLE, Texas (KBTX) - DPS Trooper Juan Tovar was honored Saturday morning by the nonprofit group Running 4 Heroes and its 11-year-old founder Zechariah Cartledge.

Cartledge runs a mile for every first responder that dies in the line of duty. Saturday morning he ran a mile around the Madisonville High School in honor of all Texas law enforcement.

Trooper Tovar was presented a $10,000 grant along with a Thin Blue Line flag at the ceremony held at the high school.

Cartledge has run a total of 164 miles and donated over $140,000 so far in 2021 in honor of fallen and injured first responders.

“Our main hope out of this nonprofit is that we can reach as many families as possible and friends,” said Cartledge. “Let them know that there are people supporting them through the hard times and comfort that now have to go through and we just want this nonprofit to be a tool to help people heal a guide whenever somebody needs comfort.”

Cartledge says he is inspired by the strength and courage of Trooper Tovar.

“It’s incredible that he’s still on this earth. It’s definitely a blessing from God. You know, just the fact that he went to this mass shooting call, he was fired at multiple times, and even though it hit his eye, you know, it could have hit anywhere else,” said Cartledge. “I think that’s a true blessing, how he’s still on this earth. I think he truly deserves the $10,000 grant and one amazing thing as well is that he’s already back on light duty with one eye. That’s incredible. I admire his dedication to serving, and I really think that he was a great grant recipient for this month.”
