LORENA, Texas (KWTX) - A Central Texas Air Force veteran underwent surgery Monday night and says he’s thankful to be alive after losing his leg in a motorcycle accident Friday.

Damon Behee, 41, of Lorena, says bystanders and first responders helped save his life after he crashed his bike on FM 2837 near Church Road, west of Woodway Friday just before 2 p.m.

The Department of Public Safety says a motorcyclist traveling northbound crashed into the barrier after attempting to pass a vehicle and return to its lane of travel.

Behee’s wife, Renee, says her husband wants to thank a bystander, Dakota Kellett, who helped apply a tourniquet to his leg before first responders made it to the scene.

He’s also thankful, she says, to the first responders who helped treat him and transport him by helicopter to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Waco.
