Sheriff: Gang member charged after gunfire erupts outside McLennan County Courthouse
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A felon and gang member from Bellmead is facing five charges following a shooting outside the McLennan County Courthouse Sunday night, according to Sheriff Parnell McNamara.
Alton Hawkins, 25, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, felony evading arrest in a vehicle, evading arrest on foot, felon in possession of a firearm, and resisting arrest.
Hawkins was released Monday after posting a $28,000 bond.
McNamara says his deputies captured Hawkins and had to tase him after a fight at a bar near the courthouse spilled into the courthouse parking lot.
One of his deputies was at MCSO headquarters down the street and heard a gunshot, McNamara says, and when the deputy arrived to the courthouse parking lot was told a shooting was about to erupt.
“A few seconds later, the deputy turned on his lights and the suspect started firing from his vehicle into the crowd,” said McNamara.
Luckily, no one was hit, he says.
After that, while fleeing, Hawkins crashed into another vehicle in the parking lot then jumped out of his car and ran, later dropping his handgun and a magazine which was recovered, McNamara says.
Deputies caught him on Austin Ave.
“I’m very proud of our deputies’ quick response to this extremely dangerous situation, and thankfully no one was hurt or killed,” McNamara told KWTX.
The investigation is ongoing.
