LAKE BELTON, Texas (KWTX) - A potentially toxic alga is still present in stagnant water along the shore of Lake Belton months after the deaths of at least four dogs that either drank the water or licked their fur after getting out, but it’s not widespread, officials said Friday.

“There are still elevated levels of cyanotoxin in the algae mats, however the mats are less prevalent,” said Joshua Brown with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

The alga will eventually deteriorate.

Residents who are headed to the lake over the holiday weekend should avoid areas where the alga is present.
