Student found in possession of a handgun arrested at Bryan High School
The student was arrested on Wednesday morning, according to a message sent to parents from the school’s principal

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - A student at Bryan High School was taken into custody Wednesday morning after a handgun was found in the student’s backpack in a classroom.
That’s according to a recorded message the school’s principal sent to parents shortly after the incident, which KBTX obtained.
“Earlier today, we received information that a student was in possession of a weapon on campus. School administrators and the school resource officer from Bryan Police Department responded immediately. The situation was quickly addressed and investigated. No threat was made against the school. However, we did discover through the investigation that the student had a weapon in his backpack while in the classroom. The student was immediately removed from the classroom and arrested,” said Principal Lane Buban in a voice message.
Bryan police later on Wednesday confirmed the handgun was located around 11 a.m. after a school resource officer was notified by the school administration. Bryan Police say this incident was initially reported by another student. Public Information Officer, Seth Waller, said this was a serious situation that he hopes people pay attention to.
“The punishment is going to be high where you learn a lesson and it changes behavior. Just with society nowadays you know people are going to notify who they need to notify to keep a bad situation from happening and from the Bryan Police Department perspective we’re going to respond to that with everything we have, with the school resource officers, with patrol when those situations happen to get that threat immediately addressed and to keep something that can be avoided and prevented from happening,” he said.
The student was removed from class immediately and arrested, said BISD spokesman Clay Falls.
“The juvenile suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the Brazos County Juvenile Detention Center and booked on Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon in a Prohibited Place and Terroristic Threat. This investigation is active and ongoing at this time,” said Officer Seth Waller with Bryan PD.
Police say a student notified school leaders about the weapon but we don’t know where specifically the student was taken into custody on the campus other than it was in a classroom.
The student’s age and grade level were also not shared publicly.
“As you know, Bryan ISD takes any report of this type of threat to our staff and students seriously and works closely with local law enforcement to investigate and take appropriate action,” said Falls. “We encourage our students and families to report any safety concerns immediately and to also use our B-Safe App. Bryan ISD student and staff safety will always be our top priority.”
