Waco High student in possession of firearm arrested
Employee responsible for screening students placed on leave, district says

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A Waco High School student was arrested on Oct. 1, 2024 after the student was found to be in possession of a firearm, the school district confirmed to KWTX.
Principal Joseph Alexander first alerted parents and staff in letter. KWTX reached out to the district for more information and a spokesperson confirmed the Waco ISD Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident regarding a “weapon found on the Waco High School campus.”
The spokesperson further said, “initial findings indicate a procedural failure at the point of entry into the school.”
“The employee who was responsible for screening students at the entry point for midday arrivals has been placed on administrative leave without pay and further administrative action will be taken based on investigative findings,” the spokesperson said.
Administrators and law enforcement approached the 18-year-old student inside the high school and placed the campus on a “hold” to restrict student and staff movement. The student was arrested at approximately 2:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
“The student was taken into custody without incident, and criminal charges are being filed,” Alexander’s letter states.
The “incident was handled swiftly and effectively. I am grateful for the strong partnership between our campus and the Waco ISD Police Department,” Alexander wrote in his letter. “The ongoing investigation will determine how the student was able to enter campus with the weapon and what new procedures may need to be implemented.”
