Subscription fatigue leading some to unsubscribe
Bango: Typical American spends $900 per year on subscriptions
(InvestigateTV) — A new survey by MarketWatch Guides found one in three Americans are now canceling these subscriptions to save money.
Laurie Sepulveda, a senior research writer for MarketWatch Guides, said people often sign up for a free trial and forget to cancel.
“And because it’s a relatively small monthly cost, then they don’t really notice that monthly charge each month,” she explained. “And then if you use a subscription canceling service, you find out that, ‘oh my goodness, I am now being charged, you know, $200 a month for all of these subscriptions’.”
MarketWatch Guides found 60 percent of people now say they cancel one subscription before starting another.
There are services that can help you with this too.
“People who need help figuring out how many subscriptions they have should definitely use a subscription tracking app like Rocket Money‚” Sepulveda advised. “Almost 1 in 5 people don’t know how many services they’re paying for. And subscription trackers are great because they can identify your subscriptions for you and even sometimes cancel them right from the app.”
She said most subscription finder services are free.
Another trick to avoid paying for an unwanted subscription: after signing up for a free trial, go ahead and cancel the subscription immediately. That way the free trial is operational but won’t be renewed automatically after it ends.
