Moreno was born in Colombia in 1967, and his family immigrated to the United States shortly after. He grew up in Florida and became a U.S. citizen at 18.

“One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so,” Moreno said in a statement. “It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America! Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege—and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing. It’s time to end dual citizenship for good.”

Moreno said the current laws that allow for dual citizenship “could create conflicts of interest.”

The new bill would require those with dual citizenship to forfeit their citizenship with another country in order to remain a U.S. citizen.

For those who do not comply, they would be “deemed to have voluntarily relinquished United States citizenship,” according to the bill.

Moreno replaced J.D. Vance as Ohio’s Republican senator after Vance became vice president.
