WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) Usually when you lose something on a beach, you figure it’s long gone, especially after a long time.

But that wasn’t so for a Florida man who lost his high school ring on Cocoa Beach the day after his 1970 senior prom.

Kenneth Board has been reunited with his Auburndale High School ring, thanks to a man using a metal detector on Melbourne Beach, 20 miles from Cocoa Beach, two weeks ago.

Jerry Pope found the ring, wiped some green stuff off it and made out the initials.

An Auburndale High official then traced the ring to its owner. Board is retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He says he “can’t fathom” that Pope found the ring.
