LUFKIN, Texas (AP) A teenage San Antonio girl admitted to taking a tub of ice cream from a Walmart freezer in Lufkin, removing the top to lick the Tin Roof ice cream and then returning it to the freezer, police announced Friday.

According to a press release, the Lufkin Police Department is investigating the incident. (Source: Lufkin Police Department)

The girl, who was not named, is “tied to the Lufkin area through her boyfriend’s family,” police said in a Facebook post.

“We have spoken with her boyfriend, who is an adult, as well. They were both forthcoming with what occurred and admitted to the act,” police said.

“We do not intend to pursue charges against her as an ‘adult’ and therefore what happens from here is at the discretion of the juvenile justice system. We cannot speak for them as to what charge she will face in the juvenile justice system,” police said.

“As to whether her boyfriend will face charges, we are currently discussing his involvement with prosecutors.”

Police say investigators had to eliminate as many as a half-dozen women with similar screen names and appearances including some who took credit on social media for the incident before identifying the girl.

Blue Bell Creameries said earlier in a statement that it had determined that the Walmart store in Lufkin was where "the malicious act of food tampering took place."

A short video posted to social media last week showed the teenager laughing as she placed the top back on the half-gallon container and returned it to the freezer.

Blue Bell says the container that was "compromised" was found and removed.

The company says "food tampering is not a joke."

Video of the incident on June 28 went viral on social media.

Warning: The video included with the tweet contains graphic language.

Blue Bell officials identified the store where the incident happened.

"Our staff recognized the location in the video, and we inspected the freezer case," the Brenham-based company said in a press release.

"We found a Tin Roof half gallon that appears to have been compromised. Based on security footage, the location and the inspection of the carton, we believe we may have recovered the half gallon that was tampered with. Out of an abundance of caution, we have also removed all Tin Roof half gallons from that location."
