The Texas Department of Public Safety Monday identified a 4-year-old girl who died in a six-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35 that sent three other people to a local hospital as Brynleigh Higginbotham, 4, of Carrollton.

The accident happened during a rainstorm late Saturday afternoon on the southbound interstate in Elm Mott north of Waco.

Highway lanes were closed because of an earlier crash, which caused a string of subsequent accidents, DPS Sgt. D.L. Wilson said.

In one of them, a Kia SUV was struck from the rear, killing the 4-year-old and injuring three others riding in the SUV.

The girl’s mother and father, Daniel Higginbotham, 31, and Cassandra Higginbotham, 30, were both taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center where they were in serious condition Monday.

A second child, Kason Higginbotham, 9, was in stable condition Monday at McLane Children’s Hospital in Temple.

Ten others were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

One victim had to be freed from the wreckage of a vehicle.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed because of the crash and traffic was diverted onto the access road.
