McLennan County: Man robbed, shot to death in home
A man was found shot to death at a rural home near Riesel Sunday, McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said Monday.
The body of Arturo Almaraz, 55, was discovered at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday inside his house in the 7500 block of East Highway 6 by his employer, who went to check on him after he failed to show up for work.
McNamara says the initial investigation indicated it was a robbery that turned into a "violent" murder.
"It's a brutal murder, a capital murder, because robbery was involved," said McNamara. "It's just a very sad case."
McNamara said the victim's house was ransacked, but investigators are still working to determine what, if anything, was taken.
"The house had been ransacked, drawers turned over, emptied and so forth, typical burglary-type activity, and so we know that the robbers or killers were looking for something," said McNamara.
They don't have anything to believe drugs were involved at this point, McNamara said.
Almaraz' body was in Dallas Monday for an autopsy.
Next of kin, some of whom live in Mexico and the Waco area, have been notified.
Authorities said he lived alone and didn't currently have the use of a vehicle.
Detectives were still trying to identify suspects Monday.
"We want to advise citizens in that area to be careful," said McNamara.
Investigators are urging anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (254) 757-5095.
McNamara said they need the community's help finding those responsible to purge the lingering danger and solve the crime.
"It can happen anywhere, and it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to happen again there, but what it does mean is there are killers that are still out there that killed this man," said McNamara. "We haven't caught them yet, but we're going to be doing everything possible that we can do to solve this and arrest these low-life, worthless scumbags that killed this man."
