TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) Four families were displaced by an early morning fire Monday in downtown Temple.
The fire started just after midnight at The District at 21Fourteen apartments on South 5th Street.
Residents told firefighters a mattress was burning outside of the complex, but that fire had been extinguished by the time the first crews arrived.
While checking apartments, firefighters spotted smoke coming from the attic of a second-floor unit and began evacuating residents.
The residents of four units were displaced, Temple Fire & Rescue spokesman Thomas Pechal said.
The American Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.
The cause is under investigation, Pechal said.
Firefighters returned to the apartments early Monday afternoon after the fire rekindled in a wall.
The fire was extinguished and a crew remained at the scene to monitor the situation.
