ITALY, Texas (KWTX) Officers who responded to a report of an opossum in a trash can Tuesday in Italy instead discovered a kinkajou, a rare rainforest animal native to Central and South America.

The mammal, also known as a “honey bear” ranges from east and south of the Sierra Madres in Mexico through Central America to Bolivia and southeastern Brazil.

Kinkajous, which are threatened by deforestation, primarily eat fruit and lick nectar from flowers with their five-inch tongues.

Officers were able to find the animal’s owner.
