A man armed with a handgun sped off from the scene of an accident early Wednesday morning in Killeen and led officers on a chase.

Officers and paramedics responded to a report of a crash at around 7 a.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of East Veterans Memorial Boulevard, police said.

“As paramedics were attempting to make contact with the driver of the sedan, the driver noticed an officer approaching and sped off southbound on WS Young Drive,” police spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez said.

Near Fox Creek Drive, the driver stopped and got out of the vehicle holding a handgun and ran, she said.

Officers were able to catch him.
