Arrest made in shooting that sent two to local hospitals

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Police have made an arrest in a shooting on Aug. 21 in the 4400 block of Mattie Drive several blocks away from Iduma Elementary School that sent two people to local hospitals.

Derrick Lamont Smith, Jr., 20, was arrested last Thursday at 309 Priest Dr., on warrants charging aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said Monday.

The shooting was reported at around 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 21.

Officers arrived to find a female with a gunshot wound.

The victim, whose age was not released, was taken by ambulance to Metroplex Hospital in Killeen and then to Scott & White Medical Center in Temple in stable condition.

A second victim, a male whose age was not released, was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle.

The two were wounded when shots were fired during an argument involving several people.
