Former Baylor head coach Art Briles has accepted a job as the head coach of an American football team in Italy, KWTX confirmed Thursday morning.

Briles will coach the Guelfi Firenze American Football team based in Florence, Italy.

KWTX confirmed the news that the coach, who hasn’t worked since being fired in the wake of the Pepper Hamilton investigation in May 2016, will leave for the job this fall and coach the team in a season that runs from March to June.

“I am grateful to be back on the field coaching football and doing what I love,” Briles said in a statement.

“Jan and I are excited to arrive in Italy for this new opportunity.”

The Italian team, which was founded in 2000, says it's excited to bring Briles on board.

“I believe that Coach Briles arriving to the Estra Guelfi Firenze will bring great benefits not only to our team, but also to the whole movement of American football in Italy,” the team said.

“We can’t wait to welcome our new head coach at the Guelfi Sports Center. I am sure it will be an amazing experience.”

Briles was the head coach at Baylor from 2008 until his firing in 2016.
