WACO, Texas (KWTX) - An armed man who fled into a wooded area near the Baylor University campus early Wednesday, prompting lockdowns at three nearby apartment complexes surrendered to police after pointing his gun at officers and them himself.

Officers responded at around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a mentally ill man with a gun outside the Outpost apartments on South University Parks Drive.

The man fled into nearby wooded area, so police flooded the area, establishing a perimeter and launching a search.

The Outpost, URSA and Oso Verde apartment complexes were locked down while police looked for the man, whom they found at around 7:45 a.m.

The man held police at bay, at one point pointing his gun at officers and then at his head, threatening suicide.

Police negotiators were able to convince the man to drop the gun and surrender peacefully.

Further details weren’t immediately available.
