BU golfer plays a few holes with former president at local course
Baylor golfer Giovana Maymon was just about to hit hole number 8 at Ridgewood Country Club in Waco on Good Friday when she realized two men playing a fast round of golf needed through.
When the pair got closer, she realized it was former President George W. Bush and a friend of his.
"I told him to go on through because he was playing fast."
That's when Maymon said the former president noticed the player's Baylor hat and Baylor golf bag and asked if she was part of the team.
When she said yes, he said, "Well then you're playing with us! It's not every day you get to play with a national runner-up."
Giovana and Bart Byrd, Associate Athletic Director at Baylor, then hit the links with Bush and his golfing partner for two holes.
"He was really nice and was making jokes, which was good because I was really nervous playing golf with him," Maymon said.
The Baylor golfer said she she parred the first hole, and bogeyed the second.
She said the former president had the same score, bogeying the first hole following a bad drive, and parring the second.
When Maymon told Bush she was stopping after the front nine, he said he was going to quickly play the rest.
"He told me he was going to play the back nine fast because his wife wanted him home early."
Maymon said it was two holes of golf she'll never forget.
"I'm from Mexico and everyone in the world knows George Bush. It was truly an honor."
For the last several years, the former president and his family have spent the Easter weekend at his Crawford-area ranch.
