Replacement named for ousted Central Texas justice of the peace

BELTON, Texas (KWTX) Bell County Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday afternoon to name businessman Daryl Peters to replace Pct. 4 Pl. 1 Justice of the Peace Claudia Brown whom a jury found unfit to hold office on Feb. 13 after a Killeen attorney filed a petition to have her removed from the bench for setting a $4 billion bond for a murder suspect.

Peters was one of four candidates for the office that Bell County Democrats presented to commissioners.

“No one had been through a process like this, and so, in that respect it was new for everybody. But I think it did go as smoothly as this sort of process can do," Bell County Judge David Blackburn said.

Peters said he’s excited about the new position.

“A Justice of the Peace entails a whole bunch of different things, so I thought it would be interesting in doing this," Peters said.

He’ll be sworn in on March 25.

Commissioners agreed on Feb. 19 to allow the Bell County Democratic Party to recommend replacement.

Brown, a Democrat, won the position in 2016, upsetting longtime Republican JP Garland Potvin.

The party’s list of candidates also included Ernest Lee Wilkerson, Louie Minor and Nicola James.

The Bell County Attorney's Office said it was the first trial of a removal petition in the county in 33 years.
