BELTON, Texas (KWTX) The Belton School Board adopted a budget and named an interim superintendent Monday evening to succeed Dr. Susan Kincannon, whom the Waco School Board named as the lone finalist for the superintendent’s job on Aug. 8.

Dr. Robin Battershell is the former superintendent of the Temple ISD who also served as the Salado ISD’s superintendent for a decade.

She announced in October 2017 that she planned to retire at the end of the 2017-2018 school year.

Kincannon was selected from among 84 applicants as the lone finalist to replace former Superintendent Dr. Marcus Nelson, who stepped down on March 28 over a misdemeanor drug charge.

The board Monday evening also adopted a $119.7 million 2019-2020 general fund budget, 81.4 % of which is for salaries.

The budget includes an average 6.5% raise for teachers and a 6% raise for paraprofessionals and auxiliary employees such as janitors and cafeteria workers.

Local tax rates will decrease slightly.

A total of 11,810 students turned up for the first day of class Monday in the Belton ISD, 271 more than on the first day last year.
