BELTON, Texas (KWTX) The law firm Thompson and Horton LLP is assisting the Belton School District in its search for its next superintendent.

Wednesday and Thursday, representatives met with diverse focus groups to discover what community members were looking for in the districts next leader.

The groups were made up of teachers, parents, students, civic leaders, business leaders and others.

"The board obviously wants to make the best possible decision for the community and hearing from the community and hearing the communities expectations and needs, hopes and desires will guide the board as it focuses on the priorities looking for candidates,"
attorney David Thompson said.

Thompson told the board Thursday night those community members were most interested in candidates with experience working in schools that have a lot of growth, as well as people with experience in a dual high school district.

In 2020, Belton will open a second high school to accommodate growth in the area.

Interested community members can provide feedback as well in an online survey available Friday that will stay online for one week.

The firm says applications will be open until Dec. 2.

So far, 15 people have applied for the superintendent job, though Thompson expects to have between 30 and 50 by the deadline.

The first round of interviews will begin the first week in January, with a few candidates invited back the following week.

Thompson says the board will name a lone finalist on JJan. 27, and then wait the required 21 days to enter contract on Feb. 17.

The district expects its new superintendent to start the job the Monday after spring break on March 16, 2020.
