GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) A benefit for former Deputy Sheriff Kelly Murphy was held Sunday at the Gatesville Fire Department.
Murphy who worked as an officer for 24 years had to step down after suffering a stroke in January.
"Just a very good man and it’s tragic to see this happen to him, and we just want to be there for him," says Coryell County Sheriff Scott Williams who worked closely with Murphy.
All of the proceeds from hot dog, hamburger, and silent auction sales went towards Murphy and his family.
"I can't put it into words, it's amazing I never dreamed anything like this," says Murphy who held back tears when arriving to the benefit.
Sheriff Williams says it is important for him, because he considers Murphy his family.
"You have two families, you have your family at work and you have your family at home," says Williams.
"One is blood and one is blue. It's good we are all coming together to support his blood family."
Murphy says he hopes to continue growing stronger and get back to work full-time.
As of now Sheriff Williams says the benefit has raised more than $31,000 for Murphy and his family.
