Deputies were investigating Tuesday after a body was found in a burning vehicle on a rural road in Burnet County.

The vehicle fire was reported at around 8 p.m. Monday in the 3800 block of Burnet County Road 202 near the community of Lake Victor, which is midway between Burnet and Lampasas.

The passerby who called 911 said smoke and flames were visible in the vehicle’s passenger compartment, authorities said Tuesday.

The vehicle was engulfed in flames by the time first responders arrived.

The body, believed to be that of a male, was sent to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The victim has not been identified.

“Anytime there are unanswered questions surrounding a death, the investigation remains as suspicious until investigators can determine the actual events,” Burnet County Sheriff W. T. Smith said Tuesday.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office and Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation.
