Noah Sanchez died early Friday at a local hospital after the vehicle in which he was riding crashed into a tree as the driver attempted to elude police following a two-vehicle accident at around 10:30 p.m. last Thursday at South 18th Street and Primrose Drive.
As two officers who witnessed the crash were checking on the people involved one of the drivers began to drive away.
The officers began to pursue the fleeing driver, whose vehicle slammed into a tree near South 4th Street and Garden Drive.
When officers found the boy he was upside down in the car.
He was taken to the hospital, but developed medical complications and died a short time later, Swanton said.
During the investigation, officers learned the boy was in an unsecured child safety seat in the back of the vehicle, but the safety seat was not secured, Swanton said.
Sanchez suffered a compound ankle fracture in the crash and was taken to a local hospital.
He was arrested after he was released.
