Texas A&M student has suspected case of new coronavirus

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) The Brazos County Health District is investigating a suspected case of the 2019 novel coronavirus that appears to have originated in Wuhan City, China.

The victim is a Texas A&M student who traveled from Wuhan, Dr. Erik Wilke of the Brazos County Health District said Thursday.

The health district says the unidentified student, who went to an area emergency room Wednesday night, is currently in isolation at his home.

Texas A&M has been advised of the possible diagnosis.

Classes started on Jan. 13 at Texas A&M and health officials are proceeding on the assumption that the student attended classes before becoming ill.

Texas A&M continues to work with its Student Health Services and the Brazos County Health District," the university said in a statement Thursday.

"Officials have described the immediate health risk to the campus community as low."

Samples have been sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation, health officials said Thursday.

The student’s symptoms are mild, health officials said.

If the preliminary diagnosis is confirmed, health officials will begin a contact tracing process to identify the people with whom the student may have come in contact during a 14-day period.

The coronavirus sickened hundreds of people in Wuhan, China before spreading to other Asian cities.

The only other known U.S. case is in Washington state where a man was diagnosed after returning from a trip to Wuhan.

The virus can cause flu-like symptoms including fever, cough, shortness of breath, and sore throat.

The general public is encouraged to practice general preventive actions including regular hand-washing, avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands and avoiding close contact with those who are ill.

Everyone 6 months and older is encouraged to get a flu shot.
