The graduate of one Central Texas college has become one of the most elite surface warfare officers in the United States Navy.

Chief Petty Officer Leland Maxwell has been in the Navy for 15 years, but he recently attended Surface Warfare Officer's School in Newport, Rhode Island.

He trained for combat aboard surface ships like aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and littoral combat ships among others.

Navy officials say the school is constantly evolving to keep up with changes to surface warfare as we head into the future.

So Maxwell is up to date on the latest skills.

Maxwell graduated from Central Texas College in Killeen in 2009, but he's originally from Sparta, Wisconsin.

Now he will be able to mentor junior sailors, incorporating his newly attained abilities.

"I love seeing the look on my sailor's faces when they advance in rank," said Maxwell. "It means that I have succeeded in my job and have done something right."
