Funeral services have been scheduled for Navarro County District Attorney R. Lowell Thompson, 48, who died Wednesday morning at Baylor Hospital in Dallas after a brief illness with his family by his side.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday at Northside Baptist Church at 2800 North Beaton St. in Corsicana.

The funeral service is at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Burial will follow at the Thompson Family Cemetery on NWCR 3320 in Frost.

Thompson was unopposed in the Nov. 6 election and would have started his fourth term in January.

Thompson was first elected in 2006.

Thompson was born in Nacogdoches, graduated in 1988 from Corsicana High School, and earned an Associate’s Degree from Navarro Junior College, a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and a law degree from the Texas Tech University School of Law.

He also served as an assistant district attorney in Navarro County and as Corsicana’s municipal judge.

The Navarro County District Attorney's Office posted a message expressing condolences to Thompson's family.

"It is with deep sorrow and sadness that this office recognizes the sudden and tragic passing of District Attorney R. Lowell Thompson. The attorneys and staff ask you to join us in remembering in our thoughts and prayers Mr. Thompson’s family in this time of grief and remembrances," the post said.

Thompson's younger brother Brent, 43, was among the five officers who were killed when a gunman opened fire on police in July 2016 in Dallas.

Brent Thompson was the Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer killed in the line of duty.
