WACO, Texas (KWTX) Area doctors are concerned this flu season may be a rough one after Australia experienced its worst flu season on record with more than 254,000 confirmed case and 587 deaths so far.

Dr. John Myers at the Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Clinic says the numbers from down under have local doctors worried, especially because the flu is a highly contagious virus not only spread through contact, but also through the air.

“People are becoming more mobile, we are taking airplanes everywhere and as we move, diseases move, so we are taking the flu with us and this last flu season in Australia was the heaviest flu season ever and we are getting a little concerned this could play out the same here,” Myers said.

Myers says it’s important people take the proper precautions to protect themselves from the flu.

“The best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu, is by the flu shot. It’s not perfect but it will help,” Myers said.

He also recommends washing hands often, eating a well-balanced diet, coughing into the elbow rather than the hand and getting enough sleep.

The flu shot is currently available at area pharmacies and clinics.
