HAMILTON, Texas (KWTX) A Hamilton County man is accused of defrauding a female relative "medically incapable of taking care of herself" out of more than $50,000, Hamilton County Sheriff Justin Caraway said.

Joe Hengst, 55, of Hamilton, is charged with exploitation of the elderly or disabled.

Investigators began an investigation in September 2019 and contacted Texas Adult Protective Services, which assisted in the probe, which revealed that Hengst "exploited funds from an elderly family member and used those funds for personal gain," Caraway said.

"It was determined Hengst had diverted just over $50,000 for personal benefit,” he said.

Deputies and Texas Rangers executed a search warrant Wednesday at a residence located FM 218 and took Hengst into custody.

The elderly victim was transported to Hamilton General Hospital for medical evaluation and later released to another relative.
